In 2023, After requesting services and submitting complaints by email, New River Valley Community Services became involved in landlord/tenant/employer/employee issues when NRVCS staff member James "Scott" Law committed perjury, approved by Kari James, on Form DC-4001 to abduct an NRVCS client from their home.
In 2024, New River Valley Community Services failed to report caregiver abuse after NRVCS Case Manager Crystal Parrish had documented that the caregiver was lying to law enforcement.
In 2025, After submitting complaints by email about harassment from an NRVCS employee, NRVCS 401 Peer Center Program Director Jared Lawson forwarded communications intended for the 401 Peer Center to NRVCS Director Kari Beth James. Kari James then stalked the complaintant by accessing their NRVCS records, harassed the complaintant with a wellness check, ignored additional complaints, and committed perjury on Form DC-4001 to abduct the former NRVCS client from their home.
Instead of responding to multiple complaints, New River Valley Community Services sent threats of litigation to the complaintant after NRVCS was asked to justify the actions of their staff involved.
New River Valley Community Services refuses to accept any responsibility for the actions of their employees. They won't confirm if any disciplinary actions have been taken against the NRVCS employees involved.
The Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Daryl Washington, and the Executive Director of New River Valley Community Services, Chris Taylor, support the statements from the NRVCS Human Rights Advocate, Ashley Wilson, that NRVCS employees "acted appropriately" when NRVCS staff violated the complaintants rights and claimed that the complaintant was "just upset about the TDO process" despite the evidence.
The Roanoke Catawba Local Human Rights Committee claimed that NRVCS employees were not required to report the complaintant's reported caregiver abuse because the caregiver "wasn't employed by NRVCS or DBHDS" and the complaintant was capable of submitting a complaint a year later with the assistance of a different healthcare provider. Their findings were supported by the Virginia State Human Rights Committee. The evidence proves otherwise.
